Retailers in Malaysia have been warned towards selling sugar with conditions, as it violates the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh emphasised that businesses found to be partaking in such practices might face suspension of their licences.
Frugal have surfaced that some retailers are imposing circumstances requiring shoppers to buy a kilogram of premium sugar at US$1.16 per pack for each two kilograms of coarse sugar costing US$0.seventy two per pack. Fuziah defined that such practices are driven by the desire to extend profit margins, because the margin for traditional sugar is often very skinny.
Since the launch of Ops Manis in early May, seven investigation papers relating to conditional sugar gross sales have been opened. Fuziah said that the problem has been efficiently managed through strict enforcement motion..
